Numerous in Cameroon express anger over the fact that Paul Biya has secured an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over accusations that he incited "aggressive electoral rallies".

At least 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during confrontations between security forces and protesters since Cameroon's election on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state winning an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader insists that he emerged victorious, a statement disputed by the incumbent party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Violent crackdowns by security personnel on demonstrators have alarmed the international community, with the United Nations, African Union and EU calling for restraint.

Minister's Accusations

Earlier this week, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he labeled "unauthorized" demonstrations leading to the loss of lives, and also condemned him for declaring victory in the election.

He further stated that the opposition leader's "accomplices responsible for an subversive plot" will also face legal action.

Election Results

Paul Biya, who took control in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the 12 October election with a majority of the ballots, compared to just over a third for the challenger, according to the constitutional court.

Opposition Response

Issa Tchiroma is remains silent to the authorities' move to bring him to court, but he had previously stated that he would not accept a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

Following the vote count, he reported that armed men used lethal force on demonstrators gathered near his house in Garoua, causing the death of at least 2 civilians.

Investigation Announced

Recently, the government official announced that an probe would be initiated into clashes before and after the publication of the vote outcome.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he commented, without giving a precise figure of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

The minister further mentioned that multiple personnel of the law enforcement also received significant wounds.

Current Situation

While the interior minister maintained the situation nationwide was now manageable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in some parts of the nation, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators established barricades on that day, and set fire to tires on the streets.

Experts caution that the election-related unrest could plunge the country into a governmental instability.
