Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
