An extensive industrial complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is addressing radioactive pollution following an official taskforce found traces of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing facilities within the area, which encompasses companies shipping frozen marine products.
Urgent Response and Goods Withdrawal
This discovery has triggered emergency cleanup efforts and the relocation of nearby residents, coming after a similar contamination alert in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian facilities.
An important international store chain is among the companies that have recalled products from its stores following the finding.
Investigation and Detection of Pollution
The country's officials initiated an investigation when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of chilled breaded prawns exported by an Indonesian company.
The FDA released an warning advising distributors and sellers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected amount was well under the agency's action limit. It added that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an acute risk to consumers.
The FDA explained: “The main health effect of worry following longer term, repeated small amount exposure (for example through consumption of contaminated food or water over a period) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from harm to DNA within body cells.”
Widespread Pollution and Health Checks
Radioactivity scans revealed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing zone were affected. The official team did not identify the twenty-one additional production facilities, but confirmed they would immediately receive cleanup procedures carried out by the country's atomic energy authority.
The environment minister declared that people living in strongly contaminated areas would be moved until the location was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.
Medical authorities also performed examinations on nearby workers and residents located near the manufacturing zone, finding nine people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.
Cleanup and Containment Measures
The affected locations will right away receive decontamination procedures by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Officials have also selected the site of a recycled metal plant as an isolation center for polluted materials.
The country, which has no atomic power plants or arms programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the country from overseas.
Source of Contamination and Import Restrictions
An official spokesperson told reporters that scrap metal shipments were the likely source of pollution and confirmed the authorities would promptly impose restrictions on scrap metal imports. He said that transport were also being inspected for potential exposure as they moved through the area.
About Caesium-137 and Health Risks
Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive element that typically enters the environment as a result of nuclear experiments or incidents, like Fukushima or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in earth, products and the atmosphere.
The amount detected in the frozen shrimp was much less than regulatory action limits, but the authority stated long-term exposure to including low doses of the element was associated to an higher chance of cancer.
Withdrawal Information
The withdrawn shrimp was available at large retail locations across at least a dozen US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
