Fabio Wardley Poised to Become World Boxing Champion as Ukrainian Champion Usyk Relinquishes Title
The UK's boxing star will be upgraded to world boxing champion after the Ukrainian champion decided to relinquish his title
This development comes after the champion informed the World Boxing Organisation he would not proceed with a mandatory title defence against the British challenger
WBO Statement
The WBO stated that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his belt after deep reflection"
Usyk still holds the multiple world titles, having defeated Daniel Dubois at the national stadium in mid-year to become a double undisputed champion
He initially achieved the all-belt title holder in last year by beating Tyson Fury, before giving up the IBF title five weeks later and deciding not to fight the obligatory contender
"WBO president Olivieri described Usyk as exceptional in a statement"
"Officials expressed its sincere admiration and thanks to Oleksandr Usyk, an perfect record holder across weight classes"
"His record represents one of the most extraordinary and historic of the modern boxing era"
The boxing body stated that its doors "will always remain open Usyk and his team"
Championship History
Usyk won the championship in two years ago by defeating Anthony Joshua and went on to successfully defend multiple times
In July, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a required title defense against temporary title holder Parker, only for a champion's back problem to cause the delay of the fight
Wardley's Rise
But Wardley, 30, took the interim title from his opponent with a major surprise in the championship rounds at the capital's venue in the previous month and was required to challenge Usyk before the end of September
The boxing organization hasn't formally announced the title change but his manager Warren believes it is a certainty
"Britain has a recent title holder and a emerging fighting personality"
"A truly extraordinary path throughout my decades as a promoter and I could not be happier for the British fighter"
"Major contests coming up for the coming period as he maintains his title and creates a true legacy in the boxing world"
Wardley only began boxing at twenty years old, coming through the unlicensed white-collar scene and has had only 21 pro bouts
