Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
