LeBron James's Historic Point-Scoring Streak Ends, Yet Los Angeles Secure Victory Against Toronto.
The Lakers star knew his historic run of reaching double digits was threatened. When it mattered most, though, it didn't concern him.
The right decision meant distributing the basketball – so he did. Following that play, the unprecedented record finished.
James's unprecedented run of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season games with 10+ points ended this past Thursday, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader was limited to eight total points in the Lakers' close triumph versus Toronto. He delivered the clutch helper, finding teammate Rui Hachimura to hit a three-point shot at the buzzer.
“Nothing,” James replied after being questioned on the record concluding. “We won.”
A Selfless Decision Seals the Win
LeBron had the chance to sought to clinch the contest – and preserved the streak – in the closing seconds, instead, he decided to dish the ball to his teammate stationed in the corner. Hachimura made the shot, prompting James exulted immediately.
It's about playing the game the proper way. Always make the right play,” James noted. That is my M.O.. It's how I learned to play. I've played that way my whole career.”
James is fully cognizant of how many points he's scored at any point,” said the team's head coach the coach. He made the play like he’s done countless times.”
The Record's Closing Chapter
He returned to the game for the final time with under five and a half minutes to go, the result along with the historic run up for grabs. His tally was a mere six points on 3-of-15 shooting then.
He scored with 1:46 left to tie the game then missed a mid-range jumper at one minute to go that would have pushed him to ten points.
He passed up another shot – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves passed him the ball with a few seconds left, but James opted to make the extra pass instead of shooting.
“The basketball gods, when you play it the right way, they tend to repay you,” Redick stated.
A Look Back at an Unparalleled Record
James's streak started on Jan. 6, 2007. It was, by far the greatest double-digit streak in professional basketball: His Airness, Michael Jordan had 866 straight games with 10+ points, Kareem had 787 such games, and The Mailman recorded with 575.
“He’s such a pass-first superstar,” remarked Lakers center a fellow Laker.
He simply plays the game of basketball. He had the opportunity but due to who he is on the court and just who he is off the court, he made the team play, passed it to Rui and secured the victory.”
Reaching double digits had long been an afterthought long before the fourth quarter began. During James’s streak, he had reached double figures by the beginning of the final quarter 1,266 times before this game.
But two of those unusual games below ten points after three periods had occurred recently: He had nine points entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks last week, and then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns earlier in the week.
James managed to preserve the record against the Suns. The very next outing, it was over – but he still rejoiced anyway.
I only ever make the right play. That is instinctive, no matter what,” James declared. If you make the right play, the sports deities are always returning the favor.”
