Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
