Putin Pledges Uninterrupted Energy Supplies to India in Defiance of Washington Pressure

During a defiant statement to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to provide “continuous” shipments of energy resources to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “resistant to external pressure.”

A Statement Directed at the United States

Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, seemed to be a direct challenge at western countries, that have sought to pressure New Delhi into reducing its historical links with Moscow. The context follows recent US actions, such as the introduction of tariffs targeting New Delhi because of its acquisition of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a reliable source of energy resources and anything necessary for the advancement of India’s economy,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to continue ensuring the consistent supply of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not referencing crude directly, supported the theme by stating that “a stable energy base has been a key and vital cornerstone of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Challenging Washington's Stance

Before the talks, during a television interview, Putin had questioned US interference over India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “When Washington can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India claim the identical right?”

Putin's arrival was his maiden visit to India since the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations made a deliberate attempt to project that the bond between the men remained intact.

An Unusual Reception

Employing an unusual step, the Indian PM met Putin as he disembarked. The two shared a warm hug akin to old friends before enjoying a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

He in his statement called India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “founded on mutual respect and deep trust.”

Strengthening Defence and Economic Partnerships

The meeting produced several key agreements regarding military and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which aims to increase twofold commerce to $100bn per year by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also agreed to restructure their strategic cooperation. Although Russia continues to be India's biggest exporter of defence equipment, the volume has reduced in recent years as India works to widen its sources.

Their communique highlighted an agreement on the joint production of cutting-edge defence platforms, though specific details of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.

Overall, Russia and India restated that in the “current complex, tense, and volatile geopolitical situation, their relationship stay durable to outside forces.”
