The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
