The Former French President Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling His 20 Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book next month called Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time spent behind bars.

The announcement was made shortly after Sarkozy gained freedom while he appeals the guilty verdict related to criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to acquire presidential race money provided by the government of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“In prison one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he writes in a preview, indicating the account centers around his musings while in isolation as opposed to extensive analysis on the overcrowded and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where one hears constant sound,” he adds. “The din unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is fortified behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, he participated remotely from inside the facility, depicting prison life as draining. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, easing this nightmare manageable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s a trial forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, deeply straining. It leaves a mark on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, set a precedent as ex-leader of an EU country and the initial post-WWII figure of France to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he declared he would use his time to compose an account.

Reading Material

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the famous story, in which a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned then breaks out to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He remained in solitary confinement for his own security in a cell of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility located in the capital. Guards were stationed in the next cell.

Reports indicated that he consumed only yoghurts while inside because he feared meals provided may have been contaminated. He had facilities for self-catering yet he declined, as per accounts. Unclear remains if he will detail his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who saw him regularly daily during the incarceration, told the release hearing security would be better outside jail than inside. “There were death threats, has heard screaming during nighttime and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began last month after a Paris court sentenced him to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
