The original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside his partner, announced how he plans to personally create this new flavor within a personal series highlighting issues the company was prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company

The recent development intensifies the continuing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

The co-founders have asserted that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Support

The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen stated how he will create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.

This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.

At that time, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
