New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
