The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

So if the writers are not listening by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.

“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a superior concept. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
