In a significant move, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated as of early November, according to an internal announcement shared with employees.

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. However, the language has sparked debate due to its vagueness. What exactly counts as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, since the limit is based on each visit, theoretically a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.

Some resellers aim to resell sealed items for a profit, whereas some search for rare cards that can command sky-high values. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 in online marketplaces.

The new rule coincides with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.
