The galaxy far, far away enthusiasts are hardly bereft of choices when it comes to excellent video games featuring the iconic energy blades, but the universe created by George Lucas is not just a playground for combat. Not many franchises have understood this better than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was crafted in the traditional computer role-playing game vein that made developers like Obsidian and BioWare legendary. Now, after multiple delays and setbacks, The Game Awards has unveiled that players will soon be able to dive into a spiritual follow-up to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
The Big Reveal
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is touted as "an upcoming single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the creative lead of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we created the original KOTOR, we wanted to forge a quintessential Star Wars experience — shaping an adventure that contained all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson stated. “Now, 25 years after we first conceived that game, our goals are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an opportunity to delve into a current vision of a ultimate Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an all-new story tailored specifically to deliver on the blend of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the center of KOTOR.”
A Welcome Surprise
The announcement is somewhat of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a modern attempt at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, rumors had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been under development as recently as March 2025.
Here is the synopsis for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in conjunction with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
The Legacy of KOTOR
The classic role-playing games, which have been made available to platforms like the Switch, are famous for their narrative-focused, player-influenced, and stat-imbued approach to Star Wars. The games were impactful enough that they inadvertently codified how people picture the Old Republic era as a whole, even now. The games bravely chose to question many tenets of Jedi lore that are often considered unquestionable, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are correct. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a much darker direction by inviting players to consider if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are revered by fans years after their release, but the second installment in particular is argued to be as one of the greatest pieces of Star Wars media in existence.
The Future is Bright
And now, four years after receiving a vibe-heavy trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the same vein. Given the craving for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's done well has the possibility to be incredibly popular.
