What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
