Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for NYC in First Address
During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his term.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
